Jutting out from the ground all along the edge of the farmstead were stone tablets, wards against what had made its home in the farmland. All around them, birch trees twisted upwards, not a leaf on their wiry branches. It was hard to think this was ever, in any way, a prosperous farmstead. The dirt was gray and ashen, with the consistency of particularly thick dust.
